::I recently spent 11 nights at the Venus Hotel with colleagues and participants in a workshop sponsored by the organization I work with. My initial impression was less than positive. The interior was dark and dingy, and the paint on the walls was dirty. They put us in the better rooms, but they were on the 3rd floor, which was a long way to go for two of us in our 60s. (There is no elevator/lift.) The hot water heater in the rooms did not work, and water was frequently cut. Also, the young staff seemed confused about arrangements that had been made with the manager. To their credit, they did help carry our luggage up the stairs. However, as time went on, I started to see some positives. The room was spacious and well-lit, the bed was large and bedding was clean, and a thick comforter was warm enough for the cool nights. When the water was cut, the staff (bilingual English/French) brought us water and even heated it when requested for baths. They cleaned the rooms and bedding when requested. We had breakfast one Sunday, and it was excellent - omelette, bread, hot drinks, plantain chips, and a large avocado salad. There was a generator for power cuts. A large downside: rooms facing the road had to face an onslaught of noise from the bars directly across the street from the hotel. Rooms on the back side are quiet and have a lovely view of the town and the Bamboutos mountains. Like many hotels in regional towns in Cameroon, the quality is not outstanding, but the staff did their best to make our stay pleasant. Recommendations: clean and repaint the lobby and corridor walls and try to make them brighter. Fix the hot water heaters. Improve the water system so that it can pump water to the upper floors.
